Morris to appeal case in correctional officer's slaying

February 08, 2008|By ERIN JULIUS

Convicted murderer Brandon Morris, who was sentenced Jan. 28 to life in prison in the January 2006 shooting death of Roxbury Correctional Institution Officer Jeffery Alan Wroten, will appeal his case to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, a Howard County Circuit Court clerk said Thursday.

The notice of appeal was filed Tuesday.

Morris, 22, was convicted Jan. 18 of first-degree murder and other crimes in Wroten's death.

Wroten had been guarding Morris at Washington County Hospital after the inmate was taken there for treatment after he stabbed a sewing needle into his liver.

The case was moved to Howard County Circuit Court at Morris' request. He had faced the death penalty, which gave him the automatic right under Maryland law to have his case moved to another county.
