And, on the plus side ...

The good news coming out of Washington County's latest State of the County included the following:

· The announcement that economic development will be placed under the county's general fund, allowing $300,000 in hotel/motel tax revenue to be shared with the municipalities.

· That county government will take a more active role in the redevelopment of downtown Hagerstown.

· That the county will support formation of a Council of Governments, a panel sought by some south county residents who felt the county wasn't listening to their input or dealing with their problems.

· That county government will explore the use of some landfilled material to generate energy.

· The pledge that the commissioners will plan for implementing Phase II of the Emergency Medical Services master plan, which involves hiring new EMS personnel and will also add sheriff's deputies.

· That three firms - Cinetic Landis Grinding Corp., DOT Foods and Rampf Molds Industries Inc. - will add more than 250 jobs to the county work force in the next several years.

· That county government will explore the creation of a senior citizens' center, as proposed by the a number of groups.
