James Buchanan High School pool to remain closed

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - James Buchanan High School's pool will remain closed this week after a parent from a visiting school called an inspector who found hygiene issues, Tuscarora Superintendent Rebecca E. Erb said.

Erb confirmed that some people claim they have seen tiny worms in the stagnant water that collected in the pitted concrete surrounding the pool.

"I honestly can't say I saw them," Erb said.

The pool closed Tuesday following visits by the inspector and a consultant to fix the issues, Erb said.

"The pool should be open by Monday," she said.

Erb said the areas around the pool need to be professionally cleaned due to their age. In-house crews had been doing their best to clean them, she said.

The consultant also had concerns about the pool's filter in the way water was circulated, Erb said.

The locker room with the same pitted concrete will remain closed, even after the pool is reopened.

"We're going to continue to use the pool for as many uses as we can, but we've got to have a meeting about it," Erb said.

Tuscarora School Board members have received updates about the situation, she said.
