Report of smoke in building ties up Hagerstown traffic

February 06, 2008

A report of smoke on the fourth floor of 82 W. Washington St. around 8:30 a.m. today turned out to be a malfunctioning light fixture -- a problem which was quickly corrected.

But in the meantime, the arrival of fire equipment assigned to respond to a reported fire downtown tied up morning traffic for several blocks until just before 9 a.m.

At one point, tractor-trailers heading east on West Washington Street were being delayed at Walnut Street.

"It looks pretty clear now," said a Hagerstown City Police spokesman at 9 a.m. as he scanned the cameras which keep tabs on how well traffic is moving downtown.
