Arnone, Warriors' 'D' dooms Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT -- Tenacious defense in the second half, combined with Kristen Byers' clutch three-point play in the final second of the third quarter, sparked the No. 6 Boonsboro girls basketball team to a 48-35 victory over Williamsport on Tuesday night in the MVAL Antietam.

With the score tied at 30 and Williamsport (7-9, 3-3) looking for the final shot of the third quarter, Byers gathered in an errant pass on the wing, streaked down the floor, scored a layup and was fouled with 0.6 showing on the clock.

The successful free throw gave Boonsboro (11-5, 6-0) a 33-30 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, and the Warriors' defense completely shut down the hosts in the final eight minutes -- allowing just one Williamsport field goal.

The Wildcats took a 30-22 lead on Morgan Smith's 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter before Boonsboro reeled off 18 straight points. Williamsport's only fourth-quarter field goal came with 20 seconds remaining.

"We concentrated on a 1-2-2 zone or matchup defense in the second half, always aware of (Morgan) Smith's presence on the floor," Boonsboro coach Max Shaffer said. "And the effort by Byers at the end of the third quarter was huge."

Brynn Arnone led the Warriors (6-0, 11-5) with 16 points. She was a factor on defense as well, as Boonsboro blocked or altered numerous Williamsport shots.

"Arnone is a great player," Williamsport coach Chris Malott said. "And our offensive effort didn't help things. We've had some poor shooting nights, but this is the worst. We really struggled. The fact we only have eight players doesn't help either. We were tired at the end of the game."

Smith led Williamsport with 11 points and Brittany Malott added 10.
