MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- The Mercersburg Borough Council plans to hold a hearing Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. to determine the employment status of police Sgt. William E. "Bill" Sheppard Jr., who was charged last Thursday with driving under the influence, Mayor James Zeger said.
"I think basically a case will be made before council for them to decide what they want to do," Zeger said.
Sheppard was placed on unpaid leave after the incident late Saturday, Jan. 26.
"He's still suspended without pay," Zeger said Tuesday.
It will be up to Sheppard whether to hold the hearing in a session open to the public, Zeger said.
"Hopefully, this can get finalized so we can get back to the business of running the community," Zeger said.
Sheppard allegedly declined a ride home from a banquet before getting behind the wheel of a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, which struck two vehicles parked at the Mercersburg Sportsman's Club, Pennsylvania State Police said in charging documents.
