CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Borough employees with injuries or illnesses serious enough to keep them off the job for an extended period of time could get relief from a sick leave bank in the near future.
The Chambersburg Borough Council on Monday authorized the administration to work out agreements with employee groups for the bank. Borough workers represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, police officers and nonunion workers have agreed to participate in the plan, Assistant Borough Manager David Finch said Monday.
The borough's unionized firefighters, however, declined to participate at this time, Finch said.
The program will be voluntary and, in order to opt in, employees will have to donate two sick days to the bank, Finch said. New employees will be given two days on hiring to donate, according to the policy.
Chambersburg has about 200 employees, according to borough figures.
It was an off-duty injury to a police officer that prompted the council to first consider a sick leave bank a few weeks ago. The officer was close to running out of sick days and vacation days while recuperating.
