Harpers Ferry hotel shutting down for makeover

January 28, 2008

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. (AP) - The historic Hilltop House Hotel is getting a multimillion dollar makeover.

SWaN Investors of Leesburg, Va., plans to spend between $20 million and $30 million on the 120-year-old Harpers Ferry hotel to provide luxury rooms and suites, a conference center and spa.

The venture capital firm purchased the hotel late last year for just under $10 million.

The hotel sits on top of a hill near abolitionist John Brown's fort with views of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.

Its guests have included Mark Twain, Alexander Graham Bell, Bill Clinton and Woodrow Wilson.

Project manager Mike Miller said the restoration work should be completed by 2010.
