SMITHSBURG - The idea behind Gabby's Restaurant, Bar & Grill, began as one family's need for a place to eat. Gabby's opened Jan. 7 in Smithsburg and is owned by Chuck Remsburg of Smithsburg and Bill Rich of Front Royal, Va.

Remsburg said that, when he and his family would go out to dinner, there weren't many in-town options.

That's when he and business partner Rich, decided to provide an additional option for area residents.

"Bill and I worked construction together and decided to open a restaurant-tavern for people in the area," Remsburg said.

Gabby's offers a classic American menu, with everything from steaks and seafood to burgers and soup.

The average dinner at Gabby's costs between $12 and $14, and the highest item on the menu is the crab cakes at $17.95.

Remsburg, who has lived in the area for 11 years, said the name for the restaurant came from actor George "Gabby" Hayes, who played Dave in the John Wayne movie, "Tall in the Saddle."

Gabby's, at 22409-A Jefferson Blvd., is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Gabby's employs 16 area residents.

Rich described the atmosphere at Gabby's as relaxed and calm.

"We try to keep the dining area and bar separate to keep it family friendly," Rich said.

Rich said that business is going well.

"It's a nice town, nice people, and everyone has been helpful," Rich said.
