Case against M&T Bank robbery suspects advances in Washington Co. court

Charges against a man and his grandson accused of robbing M&T bank on Dual Highway in October will be forwarded to Washington County Circuit Court, court records show.

A Washington County District Court judge found probable cause Tuesday to proceed with the 165 charges that have been filed against David Wilbert Shanton Sr., 53, of Winchester, Va.

His grandson, Kevin Andre Shanton, 17, also of Winchester, waived his preliminary hearing, was also was scheduled for Tuesday, court records show. He was charged as an adult with almost 100 criminal charges.

Charges against both males include armed robbery and false imprisonment. Police say the two robbed the bank at 930 Dual Highway Oct. 22 and David Shanton threatened 17 people inside with a shotgun. As the men fled, police say David Shanton shot at a Washington County Sheriff's Department cruiser and took a deputy's service weapon. The two then ran to a nearby apartment, where they allegedly took a mother and child hostage for about six hours, according to charging documents.

The judge ordered Tuesday that David Shanton continue to be held without bond, records show.
