January 24, 2008

CLEAR SPRING - Eastbound Interstate 70 west of Hagerstown reopened at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after being closed for about nine hours, Maryland State Police Cpl. D.A. Harper said.

A nine-mile stretch of the highway was closed after a State Highway Administration crane collapsed at about 11:30 a.m. near the 14 1/2 mile marker, Harper said.

No one was hurt in the incident just west of Clear Spring, police said.

Crews disassembled the crane and removed it from the highway using a second crane, Harper said.

Eastbound traffic was rerouted onto U.S. 40 at exit 9, police said. Traffic returned to I-70 eastbound at Clear Spring (exit 18).

The exit 12 ramp from Md. 56 to eastbound I-70 also was closed, police said.
