Annual C&O Canal bird count coming up on Saturday

January 15, 2008

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Members of the public are invited to participate in the 10th annual C&O Canal Midwinter Bird Survey on Saturday.

This survey, which is coordinated by the District of Columbia Audubon Society, is designed to provide a snapshot count of birds present along the entire, 185-mile length of the canal.

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will be doing the counting on a three-mile section of the canal from the Rumsey Bridge at Shepherdstown, W.Va., south to Antietam Creek. The group conducting this count will gather at the large National Park Service parking lot on Canal Road by the railroad bridge, and leave that location at 7:45 a.m. sharp.

Farther north, Desiree Narango, an employee of Nature Niche in Berkeley Springs, will be leading a counting group that will cover miles 124 and 125 of the canal, just above Hancock. This group will gather at the Nature Niche at 50 W. Washington St., and also leave at 7:45 a.m.
