January 15, 2008

The Mid-Atlantic Exchange Clubs' Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse is holding a symposium for the Prevention of Child Abuse on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Sleep Inn and Suites at 18216 Col. Henry Douglas Drive in Hagerstown.

On this day, an expert panel will be available to address issues and answer questions about the prevention of child abuse and how it impacts the community and children in Washington County.

The expert panel includes Washington County Circuit Judge John McDowell; Gina Cirincion, assistant state's attorney for Washington County; Detective Shane Blakenship with the Hagerstown Police Department; David Engle, Washington County Department of Social Services director; Dr. Steve Kotch, director of Emergency Medicine at Washington County Hospital; Teresa Thorn, program manager of Safe Place; and Jane Abrams, executive director of the Parent Works Program.

Washington County has the fourth highest "indicated" abuse rate in the state. The Washington County Department of Social Services staff investigated 1,600 reports of abuse or neglect in 2007, and assessed the risk of maltreatment for more than 4,000 children.
