Candidates may now file for offices in 2008 elections

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. ? Local candidates in Morgan County interested in running for election this year may file through Jan. 26 at the County Clerk's office.

The positions up for election in the 2008 race include the prosecuting attorney, assessor, sheriff, two magistrates and one county commissioner.

· Prosecuting Attorney: Four-year term; no term limit. Must be an attorney and reside in W.Va. Annual salary is $90,000; filing fee is $900.

Debra McLaughlin, a Republican, has held the position since 2002.

· Assessor: Four-year term; no term limit. Must reside in district. Annual salary is $43,560; filing fee is $435.60.

The position is held by John Allen Swaim, a Democrat, who was elected in 2000.

· Sheriff: Four-year term; two-term (consecutive) limit. Must reside in district. Annual salary is $43,560; filing fee is $435.60.

Ronald McIntire, a Republican, is serving his last year of his second term, and a new sheriff will be elected in November.

· Magistrate (two openings): Four-year term; no term limit. Must reside in district. Must be 30 years old and have high school diploma or GED. No past felony convictions. Annual salary is $43,625; filing fee is $436.25.

Positions are held by Republicans Kermit Ambrose and Greg Miller.

· County Commission: Six-year term; no term limit. Must reside in Magisterial District 2. Annual salary is $34,980; filing fee is $349.80.

Glen Stotler, a Republican, holds the position. This is his 24th consecutive year as a Morgan County commissioner.

· Board of Education (two openings): Four-year term; no term limit. Must have high school diploma or GED. Pay: $160 per meeting; filing fee $25. Board of Education winners are determined at the primary election and begin their term July 1, 2008.

The seats are held by Larry Omps of Magisterial District 1 and Laura Smith of Magisterial District 2.
