Mail Call

January 14, 2008

"I would just like to thank Allegheny Power for making me aware of these energy-efficient light bulbs, and taking pennies a day paying for them is not gonna kill me. I never heard so many whiners in my life. Thanks, Allegheny." - Smithsburg

"Today is Jan. 11, and I am a staunch Democrat, but I did hear on the radio news this morning from a Hagerstown station that Clinton may pick one-term O'Malley for her running mate. That would be one-term O'Malley and no-term Clinton." - Keedysville

"To the Hancock caller: I have all the respect in the world for our military and our veterans, but because some of these people commit suicide doesn't mean they're committing suicide because they were in the war. If a person's gonna commit suicide, it's nothing that the government can do about it, whether they were a veteran or not. Most of the people that live in the streets, between 60 to 80 percent of them have mental problems. That's what statistics say, and believe it or not, a lot of these people that live in the streets want to live in the streets. They don't want any responsibilities. But if everybody in the world committed suicide because somebody else didn't care for them, there would be more suicides than what there are. So the government can't hold everybody's hand, whether they've been a veteran or an astronaut." - Waynesboro, Pa.

"I totally agree with everyone about the light bulbs that were sent to them by Allegheny Power, that they shouldn't have been sent without our permission, and then we're charged for it. But everyone has to realize they will get their money somehow. We'll end up paying for it with a different surcharge for something else." - Clear Spring

"I have called twice about the all-important issue on the conservation of energy, yet in this morning's Mail Call, you list 15 comments on light bulbs and say nothing about conserving energy. Mine did." - Fiddlersburg

"In reference to The Herald-Mail article all this week about the light bulbs, and especially the one on Jan. 11: Good article. They're right; you didn't solicit it, you don't have to pay for them. Now that Allegheny is based in Pennsylvania, where was all the corporate attorneys that they had, consulting firms that work with them on these kind of issues? I think the corporate attorneys better get their law books out and polish them up a little bit." - Chewsville

"Just one more twist on the energy-saving light bulbs sent out by Allegheny Power. What is the matter with you complainers out there? The light bulbs will save you a lot more than they cost you, so quit complaining and use the bulbs. It's only 96 cents a month, and I agree with Allegheny Power." - Hancock

"In Thursday's paper, the Public Service Commission said they OK'd Allegheny Power to send out the light bulbs, but they also wanted Allegheny to let their customers know it would be a surcharge for them. Even if Allegheny had done this, it still is not right, and I think the names of the Public Service Commission should be printed, and if you can't print them, I think they should be kicked out, because every time Allegheny wants a rate increase, the public service commission lets them have it. This is not right, and I'm going to send my bulbs back, too." - Boonsboro

"I'd just like to make a comment about the light bulbs that everybody's received - which I haven't received any myself yet, but I'm sure I'm being billed also. It's a darn shame, because a month or so from now, they're not gonna lose that $2 million; they'll just raise their electric rates a month or so from now to compensate for it, and we'll be shafted that way. We won't have a choice but to pay the increase if they raise the rates. So either way we're gonna pay for those bulbs one way or another." - Williamsport

"You got thousands of people driving around in pouring down rain that don't know that you have to have your headlights on when it's pouring down raining. It's a law. I think it's pretty scary that these people don't know that that's the law. And where are the police? How many police have ever pulled somebody over and gave them a violation for driving in the rain without their headlights on? I'd like to see some police action on this." - Hagerstown

"Everyone is talking about the light bulbs, about the tax increases and everything. Well, so am I, but here's something a lot of people probably don't know. This state is one of the few handful of states that actually taxes the military retirement. That's my government check. The state taxes it. Why? Because a lot of people in this state don't want to work. I went in the Army in 1964, I was 17. I'm 61 now, and I still work. For what? To support other people, and that's wrong." - Hagerstown

"This will be some different news for a change. My friend from St. James Village just called me, and she said she saw a flock of robins out at her birdbath in the backyard. So I thought this would make better news than seeing all about those light bulbs all the time." - Williamsport
