HAGERSTOWN ? The Hagerstown City Council will hold a special session this afternoon to vote on a memorandum of understanding that would commit about $2.4 million from the city to help pay the cost to improve the intersection at U.S. 40 and Edgewood Drive.
The total cost of the project, which involves widening the roadway and making drainage improvements, is estimated at $12.3 million and would be shared among the city, Washington County and the State Highway Administration, according to city records.
Washington County officials already agreed to pay about $3.6 million of the project's cost, records show. The State Highway Administration would pay the difference of about $6 million.
City officials were unavailable to discuss the project Monday afternoon.
If the council approves, the State Highway Administration would manage the project, said Gary W. Rohrer, director of special projects for Washington County. Ideally, construction would start in February, he said.
