January 11, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

A Hagerstown man was arrested Thursday after authorities alleged he set off homemade chemical bombs in a residential neighborhood Jan. 4, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office said.

Gayle Younker Jr., 26, of North Haven Trailer Park, was charged with two counts of manufacturing and discharging a destructive device, fourth-degree burglary, and disorderly conduct, the office said in a news release.

No one was injured and no damage resulted from the incident, Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray said.

Younker discharged the chemical-reaction devices in the early morning of Jan. 4 in the 13700 block of Lois Street in Hagerstown, Mowbray said. This type of device has the potential to cause chemical burns, he said.

If convicted, Younker could face a maximum penalty of 50 years imprisonment and fines of up to $550,000, Mowbray said. He was released on personal recognizance by the Washington County District Court Commissioner, Mowbray said.
