Family entertainment opportunities abound in Tri-State area

Family friendly entertainment events in the Tri-State area this year include monster trucks, magic shows, acrobatic displays and "The Sound of Music" singalongs and costume contests (Lederhosen, anyone?).

Other highlights this year include the Mummers Parade, a talent show in Martinsburg, W.Va., and storytelling series.

Jan. 17

Kinder Konzert with Maryland Symphony Orchestra (MSO) Brass Quintet will be at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theatre. These free concerts are designed to introduce preschool children to orchestral music and instruments.

Jan. 26 through April 9

"Goldilocks and the Three Bears" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick, Md.

Feb. 1 and 2

Chambersburg Ballet Theatre presents "Snow White" at The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, Pa.

Feb. 16

Community Talent Extravaganza at the Apollo Civic Theatre in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Kinder Konzert with MSO Percussion Trio at South Hagerstown High School, Hagerstown.

March 5

Gymkana Troupe, the University of Maryland's traveling gymnastics team, will perform at the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC) at Hagerstown Community College.

March 9

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra's family concert, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs," will be performed at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown.

March 13

Kinder Konzert with MSO String Quartet at Kepler Theatre at Hagerstown Community College.

March 15 and 16

Fourteenth annual Flower & Garden Show at Hagerstown Community College's ARCC. Features vendors, exhibitors, gardening seminars and demonstrations, floral design classes, children's gardening activities and more. Call 301-790-2800, ext. 346.

March 21 and 22

"Alice in Wonderland" will be presented by Other Voices Inc. at Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, Md. The show will feature Dance Unlimited Repertory Company and actors from the Tri-State area.

March 22

The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown will host "Sound of Music" singalong and costume competitions at two times - during the day for youths and families and in the evening for adults. The movie will also be shown.

March 22

Walker Bros. Circus will perform at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center south of Hagerstown.

April 5

Ali Ghan Shriners Circus will perform two shows at the ARCC at Hagerstown Community College. Includes animal and acrobatic acts. For tickets, call 301-722-5970.

April 8

Golden Dragon Acrobats, a Chinese acrobatic touring company, performs at Shippensburg University's H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center in Shippensburg, Pa.

April 10

"Little Women, the Broadway Musical," based on the classic novel "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, will be performed at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown.

April 12

The Washington County Teen Idol Competition will be held at The Maryland Theatre, which is cosponsoring the event along with Washington County Free Library.

April 12 through June 28

"Sleeping Beauty" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick.

April 17

Kinder Konzert with Clear Spring High School's Reflections Show Choir at HCC's Kepler Theatre.

April 18

"The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley," based on the popular children's book series, will be at the Luhrs Center in Shippensburg, Pa.

April 26

A comedy and magic show will be held at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown.

April 26 through May 25

The annual Public School Art Exhibition will feature art by Washington County Public Schools' students. Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown's City Park.

May 22

Kinder Konzert with Smithsburg High School Orchestra at Smithsburg High School.

Summer

· Authentic Community Theatre members will perform children's stories at Valley Mall. Dates to be announced. Story Surprise is sponsored by the Washington County Arts Council and Nora Roberts Foundation.

· Washington County storyteller Stephanie Bickford will read children's stories at University Plaza on Wednesday mornings. Dates to be announced. Sponsored by Washington County Arts Council and the City of Hagerstown.

· Hagerstown Suns' players will read classic children's stories on the field at Municipal Stadium before Sunday home games. Dates to be announced. Sponsored by the Washington County Arts Council and Hagerstown Suns.

July 5

The MSO's Salute to Independence concert at Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg.

July 18 through 20

Monster Truck Nationals will be at Hagerstown Speedway, west of Hagerstown.

Aug. 9

Festival of Magic at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown will feature magicians from the four-state area.

Sept. 13 through Nov. 9·

Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick will present "Jack and the Beanstalk."

Nov. 1

The annual Alsatia Club's Mummers Parade will be held in downtown Hagerstown.

Nov. 15 through Jan. 11, 2009

"A Furry Christmas Carol" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick.
