January 09, 2008

The Community Foundation of Washington County MD Inc. on Tuesday announced the creation of the Officer Christopher Nicholson Scholarship Fund.

Nicholson, a Smithsburg police officer, was fatally shot Dec. 19 while waiting for backup from the Washington County Sheriff's Department on a call near Smithsburg.

The fund will provide scholarships to deserving students from Williamsport High School, from which Nicholson graduated, or to a successor organization, according to a prepared release.

Scholarships will be awarded to students who show a commitment to pursuing higher education, specifically a career in law enforcement, the release says.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund may send a check payable to Nicholson Scholarship Fund to CFWC, 33 W. Franklin St., Suite 203, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Anyone wishing to contribute stock or real property may call the foundation office at 301-745-5210.

The Community Foundation of Washington County has more than $14 million in assets and has distributed more than $3.7 million in grants to area nonprofits since 1997.

Donors may support any of its 155 funds or create a charitable fund of their own.

Those wishing to learn more about the Community Foundation and personal or corporate philanthropy may call Brad Sell at 301-745-5210.
