Remains found in Garrett County could be those of missing W.Va. woman

January 09, 2008

OAKLAND, Md. ? Police are investigating whether human remains found in Maryland may be that of a Morgantown woman missing since July 2006.

Maryland State Police contacted police in Morgantown after a property owner in Garrett County, Maryland, found what appeared to be human remains on Monday.

Rebecca Ann Slaughter was last seen on July 12, 2006. Five days later, the 55-year-old woman's car was found abandoned in Garrett County, which is about 50 miles east of Morgantown.

The remains were taken to the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, troopers said in a news release.

The gender and race of the remains was not known Tuesday, troopers said. Investigators were hoping the autopsy would also provide a cause and manner of death, troopers said.

Troopers were called to a farm in the 100 block of Sunnyside Road in Oakland on Monday, where the property owner had found human remains. The skeleton had been lying on top of the ground, troopers said.

Investigators have no found evidence of foul play, troopers said.
