WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dave Martin has been appointed as Waynesboro's newest fire chief.

Martin, fire chief in Fountaindale, Pa., lives in Wayne Heights and has been a Waynesboro volunteer for years, Borough Manager Lloyd Hamberger said.

The Waynesboro Borough Council received 10 applications for fire chief after Ron Flegel announced his retirement last fall, Hamberger said.

Two candidates were close contenders in the interview process, Councilman Craig Newcomer said.

"Dave's got a lot of experience," Newcomer said.

Martin will receive a $450 monthly stipend for his vehicle and other expenses, Hamberger said.

Trayer Stoops and Jody Sanders were appointed deputy fire chiefs by the council on Monday.

"We certainly have a lot of folks with great qualifications that we talked to," Councilman Ronnie Martin said.

Flegel had been a driver with the Waynesboro department for 40 years and chief for the past four.

"All good things must come to an end, and this is the time I chose," Flegel said Monday.

"I considered it an honor to work with you," Hamberger said to Flegel.
