U.S. senators offer condolences to Nicholson's family

January 08, 2008|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

When Smithsburg Police Officer Christopher Shane Nicholson was shot and killed while on duty, only a few state or federal elected officials sent condolences, said Nicholson's stepfather, Paul Highbarger.

One was U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md., sent what Highbarger called "a heartfelt letter."

Another was U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Highbarger said McCain had someone deliver a flag from the Capitol to the family's home.
