Forum on Washington County home rule issue set for Thursday

January 08, 2008

Citizens for Protection of Washington County will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Halfway Fire Hall.

The group is providing a town hall type of public forum for debating the merits of charter home rule vs. the county's county commissioner form of government.

Jeanne Singer and Tom Berry will make presentations speaking for and against this proposed new form of Washington County government. Both then will publicly debate the issue at the forum. Both Singer and Berry served on the Home Rule Charter Writing Committee.

Singer, who served as committee chairperson, will speak for charter home rule. Berry will speak in opposition. The audience may ask questions of both speakers throughout the time-monitored debate.

Voters will go to the polls on Feb. 12 to cast a vote either for or against the charter home rule referendum.
