A team of four Greenbrier Elementary School fifth-graders finished first in the elementary school category of The Stock Market Game.
Winning team members are Jacob Fishkin, Jeffrey Bennett, Zachary El Mohandes and Brandon Potter.
Teams from Maryland and the District of Columbia participated in the online simulation, investing a hypothetical $100,000 over 10 weeks between October and December.
Greenbrier's winning team produced a return of more than 27 percent over its original investment.
This team and others from Greenbrier's fifth-grade math enrichment class, "learned many aspects of the stock market and practiced critical thinking, negotiation, teamwork and research," Linda Forrest, their teacher and adviser, said in a press release.
The educational competition is sponsored by the Maryland Council on Economic Education, with support from national businesses.
The winning team members' names will be engraved on a plaque that will be presented to the school. The team will be honored at a reception at Towson University in May.
