Traffic stop leads to gun charge

CLEAR SPRING - A man stopped Saturday morning on Interstate 70 after allegedly speeding was charged with illegally having a firearm, according to a Maryland State Police press release.

Trooper 1st Class M.A. Ford stopped a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix Saturday about 10:30 a.m., according to the release.

The car was going 90 mph in a 65-mph zone on eastbound I-70 at Ashton Road near Clear Spring, police said.

The driver - Dirk Thompson, 37, of Akron, Ohio - was charged with driving on a suspended out-of-state license, police said.

A loaded .38-caliber revolver was found in the glove box, police said.

As a convicted felon, Thompson is prohibited from having a firearm, police said.
