2008 campaign season begins in West Virginia

MARTINSBURG, W.VA. - Potential candidates for the 2008 election in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle will need to decide soon whether to make their campaigns official.

Candidates can begin filing for the election Monday, Jan. 14. The deadline for filing is Saturday, Jan. 26, at midnight.

In Berkeley County, Deputy Clerk Bonnie Woodfall said the late night weekend deadline applied to last-minute postmarking of candidacy filings. She does not expect the county clerk's office to be open Jan. 26.

All candidates for federal, statewide or multicounty offices must file candidacy papers with the Secretary of State's office in Charleston and pay a filing fee.

More than 100,000 people in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties have registered to vote, according to registration totals generated Friday by county officials.

Berkeley County had 60,065 people registered to vote, Woodfall said. Jefferson County had 32,159 registered voters, and Morgan County had 10,643, deputy clerks there said.

Eastern Panhandle residents have until April 22 to register to vote in the May primary election.

According to the Secretary of State's office and voter registration offices in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties, the following had filed precandidacy forms by Friday. A precandidacy filing allows individuals to accept campaign contributions or spend money for their election. Federal candidates adhere to a different set of rules.
