Roxbury Correctional Institution hit by disturbances over weekend

January 02, 2008|By ERIN JULIUS

Roxbury Correctional Institution south of Hagerstown was locked down Monday following disturbances by inmates over the weekend, said Larry Kump, president of the Maryland Classified Employees Association (MCEA) Public Safety Non-Custody Employees Chapter.

RCI administrators were unavailable early Wednesday to comment on whether the prison remained locked down.

The multiple incidents were controlled almost immediately by correctional officers on duty, and no staff members were injured, Kump said.

Several inmates were injured and treated at the prison's infirmary, he said.

The disturbances occurred simultaneously in three housing units, Kump said.

The staff maintained control of the housing units at all times, said Kump, who described the violence as gang-related.

Emergency dispatchers reported that no ambulances had been sent to RCI.
