Vacant house burns in W.Va.

January 02, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

MARLOWE, W.Va. - An old, vacant house on Williamsport Pike in Berkeley County was gutted by a fire Tuesday night, Bedington Volunteer Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Ryan Frye said.

The two-story house at 8965 Williamsport Pike was owned by Rude Trucking, which also has its headquarters on the property, Frye said.

The fire was reported at about 8 p.m. and took about half an hour to control and an hour to put out completely, Frye said.

The cause of the fire was undetermined and the fire marshal's office was investigating, he said.

About 40 firefighters from Bedington, Hedgesville, W.Va., and Williamsport, Md., fire companies responded, Frye said.

The fire was concentrated on the second floor, but damage was extensive because of the old wood inside, Frye said. He estimated the damage was about $30,000.
