Hedgesville-area man dies in W.Va. crash

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man from the Hedgesville, W.Va., area died and his passenger was injured in a car crash Saturday evening.

Berkeley County Sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred southwest of Martinsburg about 7:15 p.m.

Charles Minnick, 52, was dead at the scene, police said. Deputy S. Layne said Minnick was driving a 1988 Ford Ranger on Tabler Station Road near Loop Road when he lost control and struck an embankment.

Minnick's passenger, Gary Smith, 42, was thrown from the vehicle, deputies said in a press release. He was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for treatment of his injuries.

A City Hospital spokeswoman said he was transferred to the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was listed in fair condition there Monday morning, according to a Washington Hospital Center spokeswoman.

Police said Minnick was trapped in the vehicle following the crash.
