Spring sign language

Deafnet Association Inc. will offer the following sign classes:

· Basic I - 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 7 through March 24. $160 per person, includes book and video.

· Basic II - 9 to 11 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 11 through March 28. $80 per person.

· Basic II - 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 8 through March 25. $80 per person.

· Basic IV - 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 9 through March 26. $120 per person.

Monday, Jan. 14

Ceramics and other art classes

Hagerstown Community College will offer the following classes during its spring semester which begins Monday, Jan. 14:

· Beginning ceramics (ART-120) and advanced ceramics (ART-220) - noon to 3:35 p.m. and 6 to 9:35 p.m. Tuesdays. Joan Bontempo will teach the noon section and Nicole and Vince Serra will teach the evening class. In beginning ceramics, students will be introduced to the techniques of basic forming (slab, coil and wheel-thrown methods), surfaces, and firing. The advanced class will help students develop a personal aesthetic in clay through construction techniques, surface treatments, and technical information.


· Three-dimensional design (ART-108) - 6 to 9:35 p.m. Thursdays. Instructor Jeff Smith will help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the interaction of form in space through the use of simple materials such as paper, cardboard, plaster and wood.

Free art workshops

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will offer free art workshops. The workshps are sponsored in part by Washington County Arts Council.

The workshops are:

· Creative clay workshops with Kathryn Lant, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for ages 4 to 7, and 2 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 8 to 12, Saturday, Jan. 26.

· Embroidery: make a beautiful textile workshop for ages 8 to 14 with Barbara Diefenderfer, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.

· Photography success: getting an eye for the camera workshop for ages 10 to 16, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29.

· Creative collage workshop with Kathryn Lant, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for ages 4 to 7; and 2 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 8 to 12, Saturday, April 26.

· Narrative illustration: bringing works to life with imagery workshop for ages 8 to 14 with Allison Weaver, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31.

· Drawing horses with Chris Copley, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for ages 6 to 9; and 2 to 3 p.m. for ages 10 to 16, Saturday, June 14.

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Eastern Panhandle Beekeepers Association and Hagerstown Valley Apian Society will present a beekeeping short course for beginners. 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. West Virginia University Kearneysville Tree Fruit Research and Education Center. A field day will be held on a Saturday after conclusion of the course. $30 if paid by Friday, Feb. 1; $40 at the door.
