HAGERSTOWN ? Allegany Dental Care will hold a food drive between Jan. 7 and 28 at its three offices in Washington County, said Dr. David Williams, a partner in the practice.

Williams said the offices will accept nonperishable food items, such as canned fruit and canned soups, and donate what they collect to Food Resources, a food-distribution warehouse at 220 McRand Court in Hagerstown.

"The people at Allegany Dental Care have always had concerns for the community," Williams said. "This is just one of the ways we're showing it this time."

In the past, the staff at Allegany Dental Care has collected items for Toys for Tots and participated in walk-a-thons to fight diseases, Williams said. This will be the company's first food drive.

Ruth Anne Callaham, executive director of Food Resources, said every little bit helps.

"It's just amazing ... The generosity of this community," she said. "The food drives are so important no matter how small."

Callaham said Food Resources has a hard time keeping its shelves stocked with food, especially during the holidays, when people struggle to feed their families and buy gifts.

People can drop off donations at Food Resources Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Callaham said. Some of the items that Food Resources always can use are cereal, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables.
