Pageants seeking contestants



The board of directors of Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation is extending an invitation to area young women between the ages of 18 (by Sept. 30, 2008) and 24 to compete in their upcoming annual production and competition.

Many scholarships and gifts will be awarded to contestants. Last year, more than $11,000 in cash and in-kind scholarships were made available with every contestant receiving a scholarship.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Kepler Theater on the campus of Hagerstown Community College. One winner will be selected Miss Washington County 2008. The winner will represent the four-county area in the annual Miss Maryland Scholarship competition June 18 to 21 at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown.

In order to compete for the Miss Washington County title, a contestant must live, work or attend school in Garrett, Allegany, Washington or Frederick counties. The five areas of competition are interview, eveningwear, physical fitness in swimsuit, on-stage question, and talent. There is no entrance fee.

Interested contestants must attend an orientation from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Plaza Hotel in Hagerstown. Parents are welcome to attend.

Speaking at the orientation will be Miss Washington County 2007 Whitney Colombo and Miss Western Maryland 2007 Sara Duncan. Photos will be taken by Photography by Dale.

Those interested in the competition must register for the orientation with Sandy Miller at 301-791-5974 or Denise Apple at 304-274-2346 by Monday, Dec. 31.

In addition, there will be a teen competition for girls ages 13 to 17 who are not high school seniors. Phases of teen competition are academic record, interview, talent, eveningwear and sportswear. The teen must live or attend school in one of the four western counties of Maryland. Miss Washington County Outstanding Teen will be selected to represent the four-county area at the state competition on Friday, June 20.

There is an entrance fee for teen competitors, and they are expected to attend the orientation on Jan. 5.

Summer season at Shenandoah



WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre is making preparations to celebrate its 25th anniversary with the summer 2008 theater season.

The season will include three audience favorites and a newly released award-winning musical comedy.

"Singin' in the Rain," complete with a rain shower on stage, will open the season on Wednesday, June 11, and run through Sunday, June 22.

"Fiddler on the Roof" will be presented Wednesday, June 25, through Sunday, July 6.

"Jesus Christ Superstar," a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is slated for Wednesday, July 9, through Sunday, July 20.

Mel Brooks' "The Producers" is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 3.
