SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Celtic harp duo Hen will perform at a candlelight concert Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown.

The concert is the third in the Celtic Roots of Appalachian Music series, coordinated by the community group Shepherdstown Music & Dance, organizer Joanie Blanton said.

Hen, formed by regional folk artists Sharon Knowles and Sue Richards, will play a mixture of holiday music and folk tunes on clarsachs (pronounced Klar-socks), Celtic harps.

Clarsachs are about half the size of the modern orchestral harp, Richards said. The instrument predates the bagpipe, which was introduced in the 15th century, according to The Clarsach Society, a music organization based in Scotland.

Richards said, together, the two clarsachs would sound like "glittering snow."

"All those little notes falling down," she said.

Knowles, who is Scottish and lives in Biglerville, Pa., and Richards, who lives in Rockville, Md., have known each other since 2000 and have been performing as Hen since returning from a 2003 trip to Scotland, Richards said.

The duo's name is a Scottish colloquialism, a term of endearment for women, Knowles said.

"My grandmother used to say good morning, hen," Knowles said. "It's like saying good morning, dear."

The other benefit: "It's short and everybody can pronounce it," Knowles said.

Celtic Roots of Appalachian Music series will continue in January, with a bagpipe concert.
