Nationals announce Suns' coaching staff

The Washington Nationals announced the Class-A Hagerstown Suns' coaching staff for the 2008 season on Tuesday.

Darnell Coles will serve as the Suns' manager, while Tony Tarasco will be brought in as the hitting coach to complement returning pitching coach Paul Menhart. Completing the staff are Sergio Mendez and trainer Atsushi Toriida.

Coles joins the Suns after spending 2007 with the Vermont Lake Monsters, the short-season affiliate of the Nationals. The Lake Monsters finished 38-37.

Coles played 14 seasons in the majors with eight different teams, winning a World Series ring in 1993 with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tarasco spent the past two seasons as the hitting coach in Vermont. During his playing career he spent eight seasons with six different teams, including the Orioles.

Menhart will return to Hagerstown for his second season with the Suns. He pitched for Toronto, Seattle and San Diego during his Major League tenure. Following his playing career, Menhart spent three seasons coaching at Western Carolina University.

The Suns staff also features Mendez, who spent 2007 managing the Nationals Dominican Summer League team, and Atsushi Toriida, who returns as the trainer.
