CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Greencastle, Pa., man charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence in the death of a New Jersey woman in an April crash had his preliminary hearing continued Tuesday in Franklin County Central Court.

Christopher L. Haines, 25, of 227 Tyrone St., is charged in the April 2 death of his passenger and girlfriend, Megan E. Sullivan, 31, of Bedford, N.J., according to the criminal complaint and affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police. Although the accident occurred eight months ago, Public Defender Michael Toms said charges were not filed until November.

Police said Haines was driving a Saturn Vue north on Interstate 81 shortly before 3 p.m. when the vehicle went onto the Exit 5 off-ramp and struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was stopped in traffic. Sullivan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.

Haines had minor injuries and was treated at Chambersburg Hospital, police said. A blood test conducted at the hospital indicated he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.10 percent, police said.

Toms said Tuesday was the first time Haines had been listed for central court. The Public Defender's Office was assigned Tuesday to represent Haines, and Toms said he requested the continuance to allow more time to prepare for a possible hearing.
