Tyler M. Shelbert, son of Mike and Linda Shelbert of Hagerstown, was promoted to the rank of major in the United States Army on Dec. 1.

Shelbert is a veteran of both Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

A 1994 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School, Shelbert is a graduate student attending the University of California on an Army scholarship.

Army National Guard Spec. Christopher D. Smith, son of David Smith of Hagerstown, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Smith graduated in 1998 from Williamsport High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2003 from Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Army Pvt. Andrew J. Grantham, son of William Grantham of Martinsburg, W.Va., has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.


Calem B. Peterson, son of Caria and Robert D. Peterson of Chambersburg, Pa., recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school. Using recruiter as mentors, this program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.

Peterson will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Peterson is completing his senior year at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.
