Man hurt in trench cave-in in Jefferson Co.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A man who was part of a crew of workers laying a sewer line in the Cress Creek development off Shepherd Grade Road was hurt Monday morning when a trench in the ground caved in on him, rescue officials said.

The man's co-workers dug through the dirt to free him, and he was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., according to Lt. Mike Smith of the Shepherdstown Fire Department.

The man went into cardiac arrest before arriving at City Hospital and was taken to Inova Fairfax (Va.) Hospital, said Ed Smith, chief of Independent Fire Co.

The extent of the man's injuries was not known.

Rescue workers were called to the end of Fern Bank Drive at 10:09 a.m., Mike Smith said.

The name of the man and his condition were not available Monday night.
