Mail Call

December 18, 2007

"A recent Mail Caller claims it will 'cost more than $4,000 to heat an average three-bedroom home' with oil, at $3.35 per gallon. I live in a four-bedroom house which was built in 1975. Construction methods and insulation materials were of the type commonly used at the time. During the past 32 years in that house, I have never used more than 375 gallons of heating oil in one year. At $3.35 per gallon, my maximum bill should be $1,256. If the heating cost of any three-bedroom house is $4,000, a responsible owner should consider doing a major renovation or bulldozing the place to the ground and starting over." - Hagerstown

"Just as I predicted, the Chesapeake Bay is making no progress. As of today, Monday, Dec. 17, they get a report card of 'D.' That just goes to show you that the state is doing nothing but stealing our money for no good reason. I feel that they should return all of the septic flush tax fees to every resident of Washington County." - Hagerstown

"Congratulations, Kmart in Hagerstown. You did it again. Santa Claus and the elf did such a good job for St. Jude's Hospital this year. It was so good to see Pat back, helping with the charities. I'm glad you had her back. She does a fantastic job, along with Santa Claus. And what better charity would it be for Christmas but for children, for St. Jude's Hospital. So keep up the good work, and congratulations on doing it again. We wish you all a merry Christmas at Kmart."

"Did you notice the important article regarding homeowners, which was on the last page of Section C in Sunday's Herald-Mail? The article concerned the change in the Maryland home tax credit law. Its tax credit will no longer be applied to homeowners' real estate tax credit, and will require homeowners to file for the credit. Do you think this should have been a front page article?" - Hagerstown

"The old-fashioned country Christmas at Antietam recreation center is a must for this holiday season. The activities, the show and the food were all perfect. The children never made a sound. Merry Christmas." - Hagerstown

"Is it any wonder that there is hatred in the world, when our elected delegates show such hostility? There was absolutely no excuse for LeRoy Myers to scorn his opposing party as he did in his editorial, Saturday, Dec. 15 paper. Can he not express his opposition without animosity and spite? He speaks of his Christian beliefs, but he must forget that hatred is not part of it. Kindness gets you much farther. The old saying goes, you get more with honey than you do with vinegar." - Hagerstown

"If you happen to live in the southern part of Washington County, you can expect to be the last to get your roads plowed, the last to get your electricity turned back on, should there be a power outage. So I guess we should be the last to pay our taxes." - Dargan

"I see where our illustrious, compassionate, conservative President tried to cut the heating subsidies this year, local law enforcement, Amtrak, housing, and he also tried to eliminate $654 million budget for grants or community action agencies to help the poor. Thank goodness the Democrats thwarted that. At least we got somebody on our side." - Hagerstown

"President Bush bragged in Fredericksburg on Dec. 17 that 'we're in the lead when it comes to the freedom agenda.' When did the citizens of this country tell this President that we wanted him to pursue a 'freedom agenda'?" - Rohrersville

"Whoever took the Santa Claus flag off my wife's grave, I wish you'd please return it. You parents that a kid brings home a Santa Claus flag, have them send it back to Rest Haven where it belongs. I put a flag out there every year, and every year it's been stolen. I don't know what's the matter with you people, but you shouldn't steal from the dead. This is our respect for our loved ones, and yet you turn around and you take the things off the grave, which is not right. There's a man up above looking down on you, and you're gonna have to forgive for that before you leave this earth." - Hagerstown

"After all these years, the truth has finally come out about steroid use in baseball. Now they have to do a follow-up; football, basketball, hockey, soccer. We're talking about growth hormones, right? I think we could probably not be concerned once we get to bowling and billiards." - Hagerstown
