"It will be interesting to see if anyone comments on Judge McDowell's statement during a recent trial for extortion that 'It appears that this is the way things have been taking place for a lengthy period of time.' Many people knew, but no one said a word." - Rohrersville

"I see all the Democrats running for president are saying they want to raise taxes. That's a good thing. I like their honesty. The last Democrat who ran for president who said he was gonna raise our taxes was Walter Mondale, and he lost 49 states to Ronald Reagan in 1984. I sincerely hope and I'm confident history will repeat itself again in 2008." - Chambersburg, Pa.

"The same folks on this page who decry the 'Bush bashers' do exactly the same thing to those they hate, i.e. Clinton, et al. If someone's deserving of criticism then you expect him to be criticized. It's only bashing when the criticism is undeserved. Obviously for some incompetence should be rewarded; for the other 70 percent, I guess it's bash time." - Greencastle, Pa.

"I was watching a popular TV show last night that depicted a story about dogfighting practices. It made me sick, and it also made me cry. To those of us that have small dogs that come up missing, I would like to remind all of you to keep an eye on your dogs at all times, to make sure they're safe. My hope and my prayer is that anyone in our area that learns of a dogfighting ring will not be afraid to report it and justice be done. God bless our animals. All they do is love us back." - Boonsboro

"I would like to mirror another person's call about thanking all of the people in Washington County who take the time and effort to decorate beautifully their homes or apartments or businesses for the Christmas season. It's such a quiet sentiment, and such a beautiful display, that it brings me back to when I was a child and my mother and father would load us up in the car and take us for a drive around to look at the Christmas lights. Thank you so much for providing us this beauty to reflect on at this beautiful season." - Boonsboro

"Steroids, schmeroids. Big-league baseball is entertainment business masquerading as the 'national pastime.' Steroid use has been obvious for years, even to the most casual of observers. Leave the fans and the fakers to their own destinies." - Martinsburg, W.Va.

"The U.S. government has a new Web site up to where you can actually see what your Congress people and senators and everyone are spending, how they're spending your money. It is On that Web site you will actually see one interesting fact where Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, spent $16,000 on a few flowers. Now we can actually watch what our leaders are doing. This Web site is credited to Barack Obama, a Democrat, and I forget what Republican was with him on this bill, but the President signed that bill in November, and it is up and running as of right now. So have a Merry Christmas, and keep an eye on what your government spends. No matter you're Republican or Democrat, just watch them all."

"West Virginia Code Section 8A-7-4 requires the Berkeley County Commission to '... study the land within its jurisdiction' and evaluate all the features of the land, including all the buildings, '... in relation to the adopted comprehensive plan.' The Berkeley County Commission should have a list of all the buildings that they studied in preparation for adopting the zoning ordinance. This study with its lists should now be available to the public at this time of consideration of the draft zoning ordinance. Where are they?" - Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I come in Salem Avenue, west to east, quite often, and I've noticed, not just during the holiday season that we're surrounded by, but after the last year or so, the traffic backup that happens there at Salem Avenue and Burhans Boulevard. I don't know if the City could do anything to alleviate this or not, or help with it, but many times during the day, not any particular time, traffic is backed up sometimes pretty bad. Just thought I'd mention this. Maybe somebody else has noticed it, too." - Hagerstown

"This is to the manager of Wal-Mart on Friday, Dec. 14. I will never, ever forget the kindness you showed me. Thank you." - Hagerstown

"To the Smithsburg caller about a little economic history - also, he was talking about under Reagan, that the tax had phased in becoming effective, brought up the total inflation rate, 12 percent or whatever: In 1984, Reagan had them change the tax code, which took away all our deductions for medical, everything, so that's what brought it up." - Hagerstown
