Saint John's Catholic Prep purchases property for new school

December 17, 2007

BUCKEYSTOWN, Md. - Saint John's Catholic Prep on Dec. 3 finalized the purchase of a 49.5-acre site outside Buckeystown to build a new state-of-art-facility, located outside Buckeystown.

The school purchased the property from The Charles B. Thomas and The George L. Thomas III Trust. The Thomas family shares a long history with Saint John's.

In December 2005, the board of directors voted to purchase the land to build a 93,000-square-foot academic, administrative and activities facility. The Prospect Hall land is under contract to be sold to support financing of the new campus. The projected groundbreaking for the new school is June 2008, with a completion date of fall 2009.

The new school is designed to meet the needs of an ever-growing Frederick, Md., community, allowing for 40 percent growth in the student population to 500 students. The building will house a chapel as part of its rich Catholic tradition. The design of the academic component of the campus fosters a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching with four distinct learning centers: humanities, social studies, visual and performing arts, and sciences/mathematics/technology. All of these new initiatives will enable Saint John's to continue its mission of providing a well-rounded, college preparatory education that challenges its students to develop their intellectual, spiritual and physical growth.

The space will allow all athletic competitions to be held on the campus for the first time in the school's history. Plans call for a 1,000- seat football, soccer, lacrosse and track stadium. A softball field, baseball field and tennis courts will be built, as well as several practice fields. A 1,000-seat athletic and convocation facility will be part of the activities center.

Saint John's Catholic Prep is accepting applications for the 2008-09 academic year.
