Mercersburg man airlifted to hospital after accident

December 16, 2007

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Mercersburg man was flown to York (Pa.) Hospital Friday night after wrecking the truck he was driving on Buchanan Trail West in Franklin County, according to a Pennsylvania State Police press release.

Joseph Caione's condition Saturday evening was not known, but the severity of his injuries was described as "major," police said.

Caione was eastbound in a 1988 Dodge Ram 50 pickup truck near Mercersburg Road when the vehicle left the road about 9 p.m., and struck a road and a traffic sign, according to an investigation by State Police Trooper A.J. Dalton.

The initial collision on the south side of the road caused the truck to spin back across the road, then off the north side into a guardrail and then a bridge, police said.

Caione, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, police said.

Members of the Mercersburg Fire Department assisted at the accident scene, police said.
