Man dies going off bridge

December 16, 2007

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A 21-year-old male died Saturday afternoon after going off the Md. 34 bridge over the Potomac River, according to a Shepherds- town Police Department press release.

The man landed on the ground below the bridge, not in the water, according to the release. He was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., where he was pronounced dead.

"We are investigating and have no reason to believe it was anything other than a suicide," Shepherdstown Police Chief Terry Bellomy said Saturday.

Bellomy said he was unable to name the victim this early in the investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Shepherd University campus police, West Virginia State Police and the Shepherdstown and Sharpsburg fire companies.
