Fire chief wants marshals to get law enforcement authority

December 15, 2007|By DAN DEARTH

Hagerstown Fire Chief Gary Hawbaker asked the Washington County Delegation on Friday to help restore law enforcement authority to the city's three fire marshals.

A recent examination of the law showed that it was questionable whether local fire marshals could arrest a suspect or obtain and serve a criminal search-and-seizure warrant, Hawbaker wrote in a memorandum.

He asked the members of the delegation during a meeting Friday at City Hall to review the law in Annapolis and submit legislation that would give local fire marshals enforcement authority. Hawbaker said part of that authority would allow fire marshals to carry weapons.
