Walk-in art classes

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - On Saturday, Dec. 15, the following classes will be offered:

· Felted ornaments with Ellen Kardell of Pocket Meadow Farm. Open to ages 12 and older.

· Accordion-fold books with ribbon closure and a holiday message with Jane Ping. For ages 8 and older. Younger children may attend the class if accompanied by an adult also taking the class.


Fashion illustration for teens

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Imagination Station will offer an introduction to fashion illustration for students ages 11 to 16 for three days during Christmas vacation. KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Eastern Panhandle Beekeepers Association and Hagerstown Valley Apian Society will present a beekeeping short course for beginners. 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. West Virginia University Kearneysville Tree Fruit Research and Education Center. A field day will be held on a Saturday after conclusion of the course. $30 if paid by Friday, Feb. 1; $40 at the door. Deafnet Association Inc. will offer the following sign classes:

· Basic I - 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 7 through March 24. $160 per person, includes book and video.

· Basic II - 9 to 11 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 11 through March 28. $80 per person.

· Basic II - 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 8 through March 25. $80 per person.

· Basic IV - 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 9 through March 26. $120 per person.

Art classes for children

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Imagination Station will offer the following classes for children:

· Beginning drawing - 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 14 to Feb. 4. Ages 13 and older, including adults. Instructor is Cathleen McGowan.

· Cartooning for beginners - 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 24 through Feb. 14. Instructor is syndicated cartoonist John Kovaleski, creator of the comic strip "Bo Nanas."

· Hand-building in porcelain for kids - 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, March 1, through March 22. Instructor is potter Jack Handshaw.

· Hand-building using stoneware or porcelain clay for ages 10 and older - 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, April 7 through April 28. Instructor is Lori Nelson.

· Music in the garden for kindergarten through third grade - 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 9 through Feb. 23. Instructor is Anthony Messano.

· Postcards for children for ages 8 to 11 - 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Instructor is Erin Brown.

Stained glass

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Sponsored by Imagination Station. Gettysburg stained-glass artist Tim Flagg will teach three stained glass classes:

· Three-dimensional flower votive out of stained glass for intermediate students - 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 22 through Feb. 12.

· Geometric panel out of stained glass for beginners - 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 4 through March 3.

· Panel featuring carved shapes for beginners - 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, April 7 through April 28.

Ceramics and other art classes

Hagerstown Community College will offer the following classes:

· Beginning ceramics (ART-120) and advanced ceramics (ART-220) - noon to 3:35 p.m. and 6 to 9:35 p.m. Tuesdays. Joan Bontempo will teach the noon session and Nicole and Vince Serra will teach the evening class. In beginning ceramics, students will be introduced to the techniques of basic forming (slab, coil and wheel-thrown methods), surfaces, and firing. The advanced class will help students develop a personal aesthetic in clay through construction techniques, surface treatments and technical information.

· Three-dimensional design (ART-108) - 6 to 9:35 p.m. Thursdays. Instructor Jeff Smith will help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the interaction of form and space through the use of simple materials such as paper, cardboard, plaster and wood.
