Teacher on leave after charges filed

SMITHSBURG - A Smithsburg High School chemistry teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after she was accused of trying to stab her husband.

Washington County Sheriff's Department records show that Traci Myers, 38, of 11835 Clear View Road in Hagerstown, was charged with second-degree assault on Oct. 23. The misdemeanor charge carries up to 15 years in prison.

The case was placed on the stet docket Tuesday during a hearing in Washington County District Court, meaning a conditional, indefinite stay of all further proceedings related to the charge.

Police said Myers threatened her husband with a knife, but no physical assault took place.

Schools spokesman Will Kauffman says that an administrative review is ongoing and disciplinary action for Myers could result from that review. He said that the review could result in Myers being fired or in no action at all.

The Washington County Public Schools' system will make a recommendation to Superintendent Elizabeth Morgan following the review. Morgan then will make a recommendation to the Board of Education.
