Troopers use pepper spray to subdue Hagerstown man

December 10, 2007

Troopers used pepper spray to control a Hagerstown man who punched them early Sunday as they investigated his threat to set fire to a duplex on Mason Dixon Road, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

Juan Torres, 24, was charged with assaulting a police officer, a felony, as well as two counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and threat of arson, police said.

A complainant who lived with Torres reported the threat at about 2:30 a.m. and said Torres was intoxicated, police said. Troopers T. Brown and M. Ford were investigating when Torres became "disorderly and verbally aggressive" toward them and threw closed-fist punches at both troopers, according to the press release.

Brown sustained a superficial injury that did not require any medical treatment, police said.

Torres was being held on $20,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center, police said.
