The Thurmonds

Mr. and Mrs. Markwood L. Thurmond of Hagerstown celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner for family and friends at The Improved Order of Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84 in Williamsport on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007.

Mr. Thurmond and the former Dora Schleigh Holsinger were married Oct. 3, 1947, at Christ Evangelical and Reformed Parish House, Hagerstown, by the Rev. Frederick D. Eyster.

Mr. Thurmond is the son of the late Howard C. and Blanche Thurmond.

Mrs. Thurmond is the daughter of the late Charles F. and Mabel Voletta Barber Schleigh.

Both were graduates of Hagerstown High School. Mr. Thurmond worked for Fairchild Aircraft Corp. and Mrs. Thurmond worked for Woolworth's and Miller Furniture Stores for many years.


The Thurmonds enjoy spending time with their family, son, Charles Holsinger, married to the former Yvonne DeFrehn of Davidsville, Pa.; grandson and four great-grandsons.

The Bishops

Les and Fran Bishop celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007. The couple was joined by friends and family at a party hosted by their children Rick Bishop and his wife Debbie Bishop of Tampa, Fla.; Cliff Bishop and his wife Brenda Bishop of Union Bridge, Md.; Donna Barnes of Smithsburg and friend Junior Campbell; and Nancy Kline and husband Darcy Kline of Greencastle, Pa. Another daughter, Erin Bishop, is deceased. Six of the couple's grandchildren also attended the celebration.

The Bishops were married Oct. 19, 1957, in Portsmouth, N.H., and have lived in Maryland for 46 years. Mrs. Bishop is the former Frances E. Marshall. She is a homemaker who has guided the growth of the couple's five children and eight grandchildren. Mr. Bishop retired in 1993 after 35 years with the National Security Agency.
