60th season tips off

The junior division of the Hagerstown Junior Basketball League - which features seventh- and eighth-graders - will celebrate its 60th anniversary Sunday with ceremonies and three regular-season games beginning at 1 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School.

Members of the Washington County delegation will present a proclamation from the state of Maryland in honor of the league's 60th anniversary. Members of the Hagerstown City Council, the Washington County Commissioners and the Washington County Board of Education also will be on hand.

Many former players also will be on hand, including members of the 1947-48 Funkstown Athletic Club team, the league's first championship squad, which is pictured above. Three regular-season games will be played following the ceremonies, with Senior Notes playing PTL, Hagerstown Lions against Funkstown Legion and Western Enterprise against Knights of Columbus.
