Stanford sworn in as Smithsburg police chief

SMITHSBURG - Former Maryland State Police trooper Charles R. Stanford was sworn in Wednesday as Smithsburg's new police chief, Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said.

Smithsburg Town Council members confirmed the appointment by a majority vote during an executive session Tuesday night, Myers said. Councilman Jerome Martin said the vote was 3-2.

Stanford, a 44-year-old Smithsburg native, spent 17 years with the State Police before retiring in 2004, he said. He spent about six months as a patrol officer for Smithsburg's police department in 2005 and most recently served as patrol supervisor for Boonsboro Police.

Martin, who had criticized Myers for not consulting the council or conducting enough interviews during the selection process, said he voted against the confirmation.
