Orndorf, Sharpe re-elected to Chambersburg school board leadership

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dr. Thomas Orndorf was unanimously re-elected president of the Chambersburg School Board at the annual reorganization meeting Wednesday night.

The board also unanimously re-elected Renee Sharpe of Region 8 as vice president. Orndorf, from Region 4, and Sharpe were the only nominees for the positions.

Two new members joined the board, Anne Boryan for Region 1, and Joseph Tosten of Region 9. Boryan replaces Joel Happel, who was appointed to fill a vacancy and did not run for election. Tosten replaced William Tolleson, whom he defeated in the May primary.

Four board members, Sharpe, David Sciamanna, Lori Leedy and Stanley Helman, began new four-year terms after being re-elected in November.

"Many far-reaching and thought-provoking decisions will be made in the next year," Orndorf predicted of the board.

This year, the board held two meetings a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays. The first was a regular meeting during which votes on issues were usually taken and the second a workshop during which issues were discussed.

For 2008, the board voted to flip that, with the workshop meeting on the second Wednesday and the regular meeting on the fourth.

"This way it's more sequential," Superintendent Joseph Padasak said. It could also reduce the number of last-minute changes to the regular meeting schedules, he said.

At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, the district will open bids on the $73.8 million Chambersburg Area Senior High School renovation and expansion, Padasak said.
